AX are delighted to announce that goalkeeper Zac Lubin has signed his first professional contract with Swedish Division One side IFK Luleå after a successful trial with the club.
IFK Luleå’s sporting director Ingemar Ek asked AX to notify him if they saw a talented goalkeeper during the California winter combine. It was soon evident that Zac Lubin, despite such a high standard shown by many in The Golden State, fit the mold. The 6’5” shot-stopper, formerly of Seattle Sounders U23 and Kitsap Pumas, was an imposing presence between the sticks particularly impressed in the last game of the combine, where he frustrated the opposition with a string of superb saves.
The St Martins University graduate could have been forgiven for thinking his opportunity was over following injury during the 2012 San Diego combine. He broke his hand during the first game, missing out on the chance to prove his worth in front of the attending coaches and agency staff, but his fantastic attitude encouraged AX to invite him to California for another chance to display his talents.
The 24 year-old certainly took the opportunity and AX’s great relationship with IFK Luleå paved the way for Lubin to get a trial with the club. After just two weeks with the North Swedish outfit, Lubin put pen to paper on professional terms.
Lubin will join defender Kevin Garcia in the IFK Luleå squad, who joined AX’s showcase tour in Sweden and subsequently signed for the northern Swedish outfit after just three games.
Just down the road are fellow AX showcase players Gino Mauro, Andy Lorei and Eddy Prugh at Bodens BK, with the latter being a childhood friend of Lubin’s from when they used to carpool as early teens in Montana.
“It is pretty surreal that two Montana boys wind up playing against each other for two teams just 20 minutes apart in Sweden. I am very excited that he is here though because no matter what team we play on I will always be here to support him, and I know he will do the same for me – which is something you need living in a foreign country for the first time.”
It seems that AX are establishing a stronghold in the north of Sweden, but, as far as Zac Lubin is concerned, it is now all about taking the reigns on IFK Luleå’s number one spot. His new side narrowly missed out on promotion to the Superettan last term, but after shoring up the defensive side of their game with players from the AX combine they will be confident that they can go one better in 2014.
