The fourth success story from AX’s 2014 January showcase tour to Luleå and Stockholm is Gus Villalobos signing professional terms with Ange IF. AX Scandinavian director Patrick Walker recommended the attacking midfielder to the Swedish Division Two Norra outfit and, after the resulting trial, Villalobos will now join up with the first team in their quest for a fourth promotion in nine years.
Villalobos, who has proved to be adept up front and on the wing, hails from Van Nuys in California and gained a reputation as a smart finisher during his time at Birmingham High School, breaking goalscoring records and winning most valuable player awards for the league. He progressed onto the California State University’s Northridge Matadors where his form continued to impress until his 2011 season was cut short by a serious injury, leading to a fifteen month lay-off.
A move to NPSL outfit FC Hasental reinvigorated Villalobos’s career though as he displayed his smart finishing, an ability to unlock defences with pinpoint passes, and the knack of constantly finding himself in great positions. After his two goals clinched the division title for FC Hasental in June 2013, he then owed it to himself to try and attract the attention of some of Europe’s biggest clubs.
It wasn’t that easy for the 22 year-old. After flaunting his talents in front of attending coaches and agency staff at numerous AX combines and showcase tours over 2013, he was unlucky he didn’t catch the eye enough to earn a trial or professional contract. Villalobos continued to work hard, and when AX were able to give him the opportunity to participate in their European Showcase in Sweden, he took it and played superbly. His two goals and two assists caught the eye of AX Scandinavian director Patrick Walker and after Ange IF head coach Benny Matsson asked our staff to recommend an attacking midfielder, he gave Villalobos the opportunity to impress on trial in central Sweden.
In signing players of Villalobos’s ilk, Ange IF is clearly not content with slowing their ascent up the Swedish leagues. Gus Villalobos will look to repay the faith of both AX and Ange IF by maintaining Västernorrland County team’s strong start to the season: they continually sit unbeaten at the top of the league, so are on track for yet another promotion.
