It is with great pleasure that AX can announce that midfielder Gustavo Villalobos is on trial with Ånge IF of the Swedish Division Two Norra, following a recommendation from AX Scandinavian director Patrick Walker.
Villalobos, who has proved to be adept up front and on the wing, hails from Van Nuys in California and gained a reputation as a composed finisher during his time at Birmingham High School, breaking goalscoring records and winning most valuable player awards for the league. He progressed onto the California State University’s Northridge Matadors where his form continued to impress until the 2011 season was cut short by a serious injury which led to a fifteen month lay-off.
A move to NPSL outfit FC Hasental reinvigorated Villalobos’s career though as he displayed his smart finishing, an ability to unlock defences with pinpoint passes and the knack of constantly finding himself in great positions. After his two goals clinched the division title for FC Hasental in June 2013, he then owed it to himself to try and attract the attention of some of Europe’s biggest clubs.
It wasn’t that easy for the 22 year-old. After flaunting his talents in front of attending coaches and agency staff at numerous AX combines and showcase tours over 2012/13, he was unlucky that he didn’t immediately catch the eye to earn a trial or professional contract. Villalobos continued to work hard, and when AX were able to give him the opportunity to participate in their European showcase in Sweden, he took it and played superbly. AX Scandinavian director Patrick Walker then gave him the opportunity to impress on trial in central Sweden.
In Ånge IF, Gustavo Villalobos will join an ambitious side that has climbed three tiers of the Swedish soccer pyramid in the past eight years. If they are looking to sign players of Villalobos’s ilk it is clear they are not content with stopping their ascent there, and will hope for a strong start when the 2014 campaign kicks off in April.
